InIn late 1973 Polydor records A&R man Wayne Bickerton gathered together a group of musicians and singers
to record four songs that he had written with Tony waddington.
The The resulting demo they felt had a real magic about it.
So it was decided to release one of the songs just as it was recorded.
However they needed a group to promote it.
So they formed a band from the musicians that had performed on the demo.
It was decided that a 1950s iamge would be used and an appropriate name coming up with "The Rubettes".
The song released from these demo recordings was "Sugar Baby Love".
The Falsetto(The falsetto vocal on the song was originally sung by Paul Da Vinci but later taken over by Allan Williams).
It went straight to number 1 in 1974.

The band wore flamboyant outfits and white caps. The public took the band to their hearts.
Follow up singles were " Tonight", and" Juke Box Jive" both taken from the original demo.
They did countless tours and Tv appearances worldwide.
InThe singles "I Can Do It" and " Foe Dee O Dee" were top twenty hits in 1975.
After a couple of personnel changes they continued as a four piece.
Their last hit was in February 1977 with "Baby I Know".
The Glam Rock area was coming to an end as "Punk Rock" was now in full swing.
In 1979 after recording 8 albums and 15 hit singles they called it a day.
As fate would have it in 1983 "Nostalgia" was sweeping the globe
and Allan Williams recieved a phone call from a German promoter.
The 70s Glam Rock acts were in great demand.
The "Rubettes" reformed but without "John Richardson"
whose life had changed dramatically and didnt wish to tour again.
So Bill hurd's Milkman joined them as the drummer!
In 1999 they celebrated 25years.
Bill Hurd and Alex Bines left to pursue solo careers.
Then original drummer John returned along with keyboard player "Mark Haley".

The "Rubettes" are still performing today and all the members are in good health.
With a career boasting over 30 million worldwide sales the Rubettes will be with us for many more years.
